Clearing What Clouds the Heartmind (2.5 hours)

Underneath the demands of everyday, lies a fierce warrior of truth and love that wants to do more than simply exist. In his poem "The Layers" Stanley Kunitz urges us to "Live in the Layers, not on the Litter". How does yoga help us to get out of our own way, so that we can? Vinyasa with discussion.

Transfer the Transformation (2.5 hours)

In our yoga, we devote breath, body and mind for transmutation and transformation. The techniques help us center for inner healing so we may align with, and live from, our own truth. While this is a worthy journey within itself, living yoga asks that we take this truth, and openly share it with others. Without the sharing piece, "for the greater good of all", we can get lost in our ego selves and spiritually bypass. When we ask ourselves: What is my purpose? What am I here to do?" we often discover our dharma (purpose) buried like a pot of gold within our karma (shadows & wounds). Slow Flow Vinyasa & Yin Yoga with some discussion.

Yin Yoga Master Class (2 hours)

Yin Yoga is a slow paced style of yoga where the postures are held for three to five minutes per pose. It has the same goals and objectives as other styles of yoga; however, it directs the stimulation normally created in the poses deeper than the superficial or muscular tissues. In a Yin practice, the connective tissues: fascia, the ligaments, bones, and joints are targeted, increasing circulation in the hip, pelvic, shoulder and knee joints and improving flexibility in our spine.Suitable for almost all levels of professionals, practitioners and students in the healing arts, yoga, dance, body work practices, Yin Yoga is a perfect complement to the dynamic and muscular (yang) styles of yoga that emphasize internal heat, and the lengthening and contracting of our muscles. Yin aims to cultivate inner silence, self awareness, and bringing to light a universal, interconnecting quality to our practice. In this two hour master class, we will explore the four basic tenants to Yin Yoga, and experience a soulful and balancing yin practice for our physical, energetic, mental & emotional bodies.

The Psoas Part One: Location & Function of the Muscle of the Soul (2-2.5 hours)

The Psoas muscle is the deepest muscle of the human body affecting our structural balance, muscular integrity, flexibility, strength, range of motion, joint mobility, and organ functioning. Additionally, the psoas acts as a body brain, and many mystics considered it the "muscle of the soul" composed of bio-intelligent tissue that acts as a hinge between earth and spirit. As Liz Koch puts it, the psoas “literally embodies our deepest urge for survival, and more profoundly, our elemental desire to flourish.”An overly contracted psoas has been the culprit of many physical & emotional ailments, most dangerously by holding us in a patterning of "Fight or Flight" creating back, pelvic and hip problems, organ disfunction, as well as triggering unnecessary fear and anxiety. A relaxed psoas is the mark of freedom in body & spirit, helping to soften us into the flow of play and creativity. In this workshop we will locate and learn the function of the psoas: from the anatomical and physical perspective. We'll practice several stretches that can be done daily to maintain a healthy psoas; and a powerful healing and relaxing technique for releasing the psoas, and the lifetimes of tension located there.

Psoas Part Two: Taking the Conversation Deeper: Emotions & Spirituality (2.5-3 hours)

In Part Two of the Psoas workshop, we will focus primarily on the emotional, psychic and spiritual relationship with the psoas muscle, by exploring more in depth the relationship this juicy muscle has within our Emotional and Energy Body Layers. Releasing tension in our psoas grounds us to the Earth, which is filled with healing and vitality, allowing us to balance our personal and collective energy so we may feel more present in the moment and tap into the limitless creative energy that comes from the earth. The ancients understood the importance of releasing contracted psoas muscle, which is why in many mystical sciences, it is considered to be the "Muscle of the Soul". In this Workshop, we will explore in depth:

  1. The Spiritual Impact of Emotions, Trauma & The Patterning in the Sympathetic Nervous System

  2. The Chakras & the relationship the Psoas has in informing the our Five Bodies in Yogic Science

  3. Karma & Dharma in the Psoas: Reading the Messages of the Soul. The workshop will include discussion, meditation, and a very potent psoas release.

ROOT (2-2.5 hours)

Being self-centered is not always a bad thing. In this first workshop we will focus on the three lower chakras and from our feet to our core; connecting to the stabilizing force of earth, the fluid movement of water, and the dynamic power of fire. We will learn to engage the energy locks of our root and our belly and how to use these techniques to support our standing postures, hip openers, balancing poses and core awareness-- so to be most centered in our practice; furthermore, we will explore how these techniques help us to stand firmy in our lives and walk the world with purpose.

OPEN (2-2.5 hours)

Loving what is. This workshop will bring awareness to our fourth chakra, the heart center. The postures will focus on spinal alignment and the subtle body channels that flow along this channel of life. Back bends, forward folds, twists and the energy seal in our upper chest/low throat will help us experience the expansion of the air element found in our bodies. We'll practice some uplifting Bhakti Yoga techniques to help us untie the knots of the heart, ride the winds of change and experience the peace found in loving, "even if", unconditionally.

RISE (2-2.5 hours)

Fear and faith….same coin, different sides. In this workshop we will utilize the energy of our upper three chakras as well as the three energy seals and focus on the shoulder openers, prepping for inversions and playing with arm balances. We'll experiment with the element of space; tapping the limitless potential found if we could just get our mind out of the way and allow in some faith. Fear or freedom? It's your choice.

Self-Sufficient Yoga (2 hours)
Practicing yoga in classes is a wonderful experience, but not always feasible or desirable. The true journey of a yogi is to own a self-practice that can be done anywhere, anytime. Only when we cultivate self-sufficiency in our yoga can we truly reap all of the many benefits of this sacred science of Self-knowing and appley this learning to daily living. We will move, discuss, and learn a balanced and complete 20-minute sequence that includes breath-work, physical postures, and meditation that you can "take-away" and truly integrate into your life.

Variations and Motivations in our Practice (2-3 hours)
Learn to enhance our human-spirit experience within some of the postures taught in most group classes by adding techniques that cultivate our inner fire and self awareness. Get a richer experience of ourselves within the postures to take into our practice in any group class for self-sufficiency.

Techniques include:

  • variations to some basic postures and flow in yoga classes

  • utilize energy locks and breath to drop deeper into our experience while holding poses

  • work with the mind-body connection to play with our "edge" both physically and mentally and get into postures we find unobtainable

  • practice out of habit, cultivate beginners mind, and get something fresh from every experience.

The yoga postures serve as miniature lifetimes squeezed into a shape. It's never really about the pose in and of itself, but about being skilled at tracking our experience of Self in the pose. As we track, with steady breath and awareness-- our habits, our survival skills, our desires, our sweet spots-- are illuminated, and thus the journey to Self begins...again and again, each breath, each shape.

Patanjali's Yoga Sutra 2.46, states, “sthira sukham asanam.” translates as, “all postures should be both stable and comfortable.”

In this workshop, we will examine physical and subtle body alignment of the Spine and Major Synovial Joints, to keep our body safe while practicing and fully enjoy the fruits of our labor in the moment of NOW. We will use our understanding of alignment to ask the bigger question: with so many ways to exercise and so many methods to self-realize, why do we bother doing the yoga poses at all?

We will discuss and practice techniques on how to simultaneously dance with effort and ease in all our postures, what they offer us, and more importantly, in our lives.

Our inquiry together will include:

  • The Four Directions of Efforting

  • Ease-ing with Breath, The Relaxation Response and Intention

  • The Five Major Movements of the Spine & The Three Central Nadis (rivers of energy that correlate with the spine)

  • Our Synovial Joints & their Relationship to Our Emotional Well-Being

  • How practicing Yoga Asana Mirrors the Practice of Life.

  • Conversation & Posture 'break-downs"

Yoga is both a noun and a verb. In it's essence yoga means to yoke our true nature, taking the various parts of self and returning to the whole, peaceful and love that always exists inside. Yoga is also a science of practices and tools that, if exercised with devotion get us back to the Yoga: home to ourselves. According to yoga science, we live equally within five bodies: physical, energetic, mental/emotional, high intellect, and peace. Each of the five bodies inform one another, and when unified, bring us well-ness. Even thousands of years ago, the yogis and mystics understood that we come into life with unique interests and gifts and learn in different ways; and developed a science that respects our five bodies, and offers us five pathways to the one whole.

In this workshop, we will explore the Five Bodies, and the Methodologies expressed through the five points of the Yoga Star:

  1. Hatha Yoga: The Postures and Breath work Exercises (Physical)

  2. Raja Yoga: The Royal Path of Meditation (Energetic)

  3. Bhakti Yoga: The Yoga of Devotion, Mantra & Dynamic Movement (Mental/Emotional)

  4. Jhana Yoga: The Yoga of Study, Self Inquiry and Understanding the Ancient Sacred Texts (High Intellect)

  5. Yoga: The Yoga of Selfless Service (Peace)5) Karma
